Hearing Visual, Looking Sound is a self-funded performance organized by Chow Jun Yan, a Malaysian contemporary classical composer who is currently proceeding his PhD studies in National University of Singapore (NUS), focusing on the investigation of the modes of communication between the musician and the visual artist during an improvisatory performance.
The main objective of the research is to observe, reveal, and identify the communication strategies between the musician and the visual artist who interact and engage in a semi-structured sound-visual improvisatory performance. An understanding of the process of communication between the performers during the collaboration such as the modes of communication and the types of actions which have been employed during the interaction will help to identify and discover the aspects of these strategies that are distinct from those used in ‘single mode’ improvisation. Furthermore, the insight gained will be able to inform the design of a media platform for facilitating communication in the SV improvisational context.
Instead of carrying out the investigation in a laboratory situation, Jun Yan has decided to conduct the investigation in a naturalistic environment. Jun Yan believes that a live performance will manage provide an opportunity to identify a more holistic view of group communication. At the same time, Jun Yan wishes to introduce this type of interdisciplinary performance to the audience. It is an interesting moment to observe how the musician and visual artist utilize the skills within their native disciplines to produce the audio and visual outputs for the improvisation respectively.
This is the debut sound-visual improvisation performance organized by Jun Yan, together with Max Riefer (Germany, percussionist), Kittiphan Janbuala (Thailand, digital visual artist) and Ng Chor Guan (Malaysia, Theremin player). Jun Yan needs your financial support for the performance to be a success.
The fund will be used for the rental of a performance venue and equipment, and the payment for performance fees, design and printing, video recording and DVD production.
